Steel production involves numerous processes, each generating various residues and wastes. These pollutants can be categorized by their state: solid, liquid, and gaseous.

Solid pollutants include dust, blast furnace slag, converter slag, iron oxide scale, and refractory materials.

Liquid pollutants include wastewater and its contained harmful and toxic substances such as suspended solids (SS), oil, ammonia nitrogen, phenols, and cyanides.

Gaseous pollutants include CO2, NOx, H2S, CO, VOCs, and particulate matter such as smoke and dust.
