What are the characteristics of chain drives?

Chain drives include driving chains, driven chains, and circular chains.

Compared to gear drives, chain drives have the following main characteristics: lower manufacturing and installation precision requirements; simpler transmission structure when the center distance is large; and non-constant instantaneous chain speed and instantaneous transmission ratio, resulting in poorer transmission smoothness.

Both chain drives and gear drives rely on meshing for transmission. However, gear drives offer separability, smoother operation, and higher load-bearing capacity. Chain drives can be used in applications where the center distance between two shafts is large.
