Understanding the Structure of an Oil-Air Lubrication System

When reviewing an oil-air lubrication proposal, engineers and purchasing teams may encounter a long list of components, each serving a specific function.

Understanding how these components work together helps buyers evaluate system configurations, compare technical proposals and plan future maintenance.

A typical centralized oil-air lubrication system may include a main station, optional satellite stations, an oil supply unit, compressed-air treatment equipment, oil metering and distribution components, pipelines and an electrical control system.

The exact configuration depends on the number of lubrication points, equipment layout, operating conditions and required monitoring functions.

1. Electrical Control System: Coordinating System Operation

The electrical control system manages the operating logic of the lubrication equipment.

Depending on the configuration, it may support:

Automatic and manual operating modes.

Lubrication cycle settings.

Pump start and stop control.

Operating-status indication.

Fault alarms and protective functions.

Communication with selected monitoring devices.

A programmable logic controller (PLC) may be used to execute the control logic. The functions available depend on the specified control cabinet, instrumentation and system design.

During technical evaluation, buyers should confirm which operating parameters can be adjusted and which faults the system can actually detect.

2. Oil Supply Unit: Storing and Delivering Lubricant

The oil supply unit generally includes an oil reservoir and pump, with additional components selected according to the application.

Its primary function is to store the lubricant and deliver it to the relevant metering and distribution components.

Depending on the oil and operating environment, the system may also include filtration, level monitoring or oil heating where required.

The reservoir capacity, pump delivery, filtration arrangement and lubricant grade should be selected according to the system's demand and the equipment manufacturer's recommendations.

3. Compressed-Air Treatment: Preparing the Air Supply

Compressed air is an essential part of an oil-air lubrication system because it transports metered oil through the pipeline.

The air treatment arrangement may include filtration, moisture removal and pressure regulation. The specific components depend on the quality of the available air supply and the requirements of the lubrication system.

Inadequate air quality or unstable pressure can affect system operation. For this reason, the air supply should be checked during design and commissioning, and the treatment components should be maintained according to their specifications.

4. Oil Metering and Distribution Components: Delivering the Required Quantity

The oil metering and distribution arrangement determines how lubricant is allocated to the designated lubrication points.

Oil is introduced into the compressed-air stream in a controlled manner, and the resulting oil-air flow is transported through the pipeline network.

The distribution components must be selected according to the number of lubrication points, required delivery quantities, pipeline layout and system operating conditions.

Not every lubrication point necessarily requires the same oil quantity. The design should account for the needs of each connected bearing or mechanical component.

5. Pipelines: Connecting the System to the Equipment

Pipelines carry the oil, compressed air or oil-air flow between the relevant components, depending on the system architecture.

Their dimensions, routing, connections and installation conditions influence pressure losses, accessibility and maintenance requirements.

During technical review, the pipeline layout should be checked for equipment interference, mechanical protection, actual distances and access for inspection.

A clear layout drawing is also valuable for future troubleshooting and system modifications.

6. Main Station and Satellite Stations: Organizing the Network

The main station generally provides centralized oil storage and the primary supply and control functions.

Satellite stations may be used to serve local groups of lubrication points when the production line covers a large area or when the distribution arrangement requires additional stages.

Smaller systems with a limited number of nearby lubrication points may not require satellite stations. Larger systems with widely distributed points may benefit from a multi-stage arrangement, subject to engineering verification.

The decision should consider pipeline distance, required supply capacity, installation space, pressure loss and maintenance access rather than relying only on the number of lubrication points.

How Should Buyers Evaluate an Oil-Air Lubrication Proposal?

When comparing technical offers, do not compare the total price alone. Check whether each proposal addresses the actual operating requirements.

A useful review checklist includes:

Number and location of lubrication points.

Oil type, metering requirements and pump capacity.

Distributor configuration and pipeline layout.

Compressed-air quality and pressure requirements.

Electrical control and monitoring scope.

Installation space and maintenance accessibility.

Commissioning, documentation and operator training.

Spare parts and ongoing maintenance requirements.

A lower-priced proposal may have a different technical scope, so all quotations should be compared against the same defined requirements.
