In many industrial applications, equipment operates in environments where it is continuously exposed to water, iron oxide scale, and corrosive chemical fluids. These aggressive substances can gradually erode critical components—especially bearings—leading to reduced equipment life and decreased production efficiency.

A typical example can be found in cold rolling mills for strip steel production. In these systems, emulsion rolling fluids, which are essential for the rolling process, are constantly present around the roll neck area. Over time, the emulsion can penetrate the bearing housing and cause corrosion or contamination, affecting the stable operation of the equipment.

 

Advantages of Oil-Air Lubrication

For such demanding operating conditions, oil-air lubrication systems offer unique advantages in protecting equipment.

Unlike traditional lubrication methods, oil-air lubrication delivers lubricant and compressed air separately and then combines them to form a controlled oil-air flow. The mixture is transported through pipelines and finally delivered to the lubrication point in the form of fine oil droplets.

This precise delivery ensures that the bearings receive the exact amount of lubricant required—avoiding both insufficient lubrication and excessive oil supply. As a result, the system provides efficient lubrication while maintaining clean operating conditions inside the bearing assembly.

 

Positive Pressure Sealing Protection

One of the most important benefits of oil-air lubrication lies in its sealing capability.

When the oil-air mixture enters the bearing housing, the compressed air gradually escapes from the housing and creates a positive pressure environment of approximately 0.1–0.3 bar. This positive pressure acts as a protective barrier that prevents external contaminants from entering the bearing.

Substances such as water, harmful gases, iron oxide scale, and other impurities are effectively blocked from penetrating the bearing housing. This protection significantly reduces the risk of corrosion and contamination, helping maintain stable bearing operation.

 

Improving Reliability in Harsh Conditions

Another advantage of oil-air lubrication systems is that they can often be implemented without major modifications to existing equipment. This makes them suitable for a wide range of industrial applications where harsh operating conditions are common.

By providing precise lubrication, effective sealing, and improved contamination protection, oil-air lubrication systems help reduce equipment failures, lower maintenance costs, and support stable industrial production.

In demanding environments, selecting the appropriate lubrication method is essential for extending equipment service life and ensuring reliable long-term operation.
