Choosing the Right Lubricant for Oil-Air Lubrication Systems

Release time:

2023-03-23

Unlike oil mist lubrication systems, oil-air lubrication systems are highly tolerant of lubricant viscosity. This makes them suitable for a much wider range of industrial applications and operating conditions.

Oil-air lubrication systems can transport lubricants with viscosities up to 7500 mm²/s, offering excellent flexibility for different equipment requirements.

Wide Compatibility with Different Lubricants

Thanks to its unique operating principle, oil-air lubrication can handle:

  • Low-viscosity oils
  • Semi-fluid grease
  • High-viscosity lubricants
  • Special lubricants containing a high percentage of solid particles

This wide compatibility allows the system to perform reliably even in demanding industrial environments.

Recommended Lubricant Types

For most industrial applications, it is recommended to use:

  • ISO VG220–460 high-temperature EP gear oil
  • Synthetic lubricants designed for heavy-duty operation

These lubricants provide several important advantages:

  • Excellent high-temperature resistance
  • Strong extreme-pressure (EP) performance
  • Stable oil film formation
  • Reduced component wear
  • Longer equipment service life

They are especially suitable for rolling mills, continuous casting machines, bearings, and other heavy-load industrial equipment.

Lubricant Cleanliness Requirements

Many users assume oil-air lubrication systems require extremely clean oil, but the actual cleanliness requirement is relatively moderate.

Generally, lubricant cleanliness of NAS Class 9 or better is sufficient for stable system operation.

In most cases, new industrial lubricant can be used directly without additional treatment.

Filtration Is Still Recommended

Although the cleanliness requirement is not overly strict, filtration during oil filling is strongly recommended.

Using a filter with a filtration accuracy of at least 40 μm can help:

  • Remove contaminants from new oil
  • Prevent accidental mixing with contaminated oil
  • Reduce blockage risks
  • Improve long-term system reliability

Proper filtration is a simple but effective way to reduce maintenance issues and protect lubrication components.

Proper Lubricant Selection Improves System Performance

Choosing the correct lubricant and maintaining proper oil cleanliness helps ensure:

  • Stable lubrication performance
  • Lower equipment wear
  • Reduced maintenance frequency
  • Longer bearing and equipment life
  • Improved operational reliability

With the right lubricant management practices, oil-air lubrication systems can deliver efficient, stable, and long-lasting protection for industrial equipment.
