A belt drive system consists of a driving pulley, driven pulley, and an endless belt. It is commonly used to transmit power between parallel shafts rotating in the same direction, known as an open belt drive. Key design considerations include center distance, wrap angle, transmission ratio, belt stress, and the allowable power of a single V-belt.

Based on belt cross-section shape, belt drives are generally classified into flat belts, V-belts, and special belts.

Advantages

Suitable for power transmission over large center distances

Good flexibility, effectively absorbing shock and vibration

Slip under overload conditions protects other components from damage

Simple structure and low cost

Disadvantages

Larger overall size compared to other drive systems

Requires a tensioning device

Slip prevents a constant transmission ratio

Relatively short belt service life

Lower transmission efficiency
