Best Practices for Stable Operation of Oil-Air Lubrication Systems

The reliable performance of an oil-air lubrication system depends on the proper management of both lubricant and compressed air. Key factors such as oil selection, cleanliness control, and air parameter regulation play a critical role in ensuring long-term stability and maximizing system efficiency.

Lubricant Selection and Cleanliness

Oil-air systems are highly adaptable to different lubricant types. Common industrial oils—including mineral oils, semi-fluid greases, and even lubricants containing solid additives—can be effectively delivered. In practice, ISO VG 220–460 high-temperature extreme pressure (EP) gear oils or synthetic oils are recommended for optimal performance in demanding environments.

Cleanliness requirements are relatively moderate, with NAS Class 9 generally sufficient for operation. Most new oils can be used directly; however, to minimize contamination risks, it is advisable to use a filter with a precision of at least 40 microns during filling.

Compressed Air Control

Compressed air acts as the carrier for lubricant delivery and must be carefully regulated. The recommended working pressure is 3–4 bar, with adjustments made for complex piping systems or multiple lubrication points. Moisture control is essential, as excess water can damage the oil film and lead to premature wear of bearings and gears.

To ensure air quality, dedicated air treatment units are typically integrated into the system, providing filtration, dewatering, and pressure regulation.

System Monitoring and Control

Modern oil-air lubrication systems are equipped with PLC-based control systems and user-friendly interfaces. These enable real-time monitoring of oil supply, air pressure, and mixture performance, while supporting local, remote, and test operation modes. Integration with central control systems allows for alarms, interlocks, and efficient maintenance management.

Conclusion

By standardizing lubricant selection, controlling compressed air quality, and leveraging advanced monitoring systems, oil-air lubrication systems can deliver superior reliability, extended equipment life, and reduced operating costs in industrial applications.
